TEF Canada Speaking Practice Topics
The TEF Canada speaking section (Expression Orale) has two tasks: asking questions to gather information, and persuading someone to do something. Below are practice topics for both, grouped by theme. Each one links to a scenario you can rehearse out loud with an AI examiner that scores you on the NCLC scale.
These are practice topics, not predicted exam questions. Official TEF Canada content is confidential and can change at any time. Use these to build the underlying speaking skills — not to memorise answers.
What is tested in TEF Canada speaking?
Section 4 (Expression Orale) lasts about 15 minutes and is scored on the NCLC scale from 1 to 12. Examiners listen for fluency, vocabulary range, grammatical accuracy, coherence, pronunciation, and — critically — whether you use the right register for each task. Most Express Entry programs require NCLC 7 in speaking, and reaching NCLC 7+ across all four skills can add up to 50 CRS points.
What is Task 1? (Asking questions)
In Task 1 you are given a short advert or notice and must telephone to get more information. You use the formal vous register and ask clear, well-formed questions for about 5 minutes. It tests whether you can gather information politely and precisely under time pressure.

How should I practice?
Reading topics silently does not move your speaking score. Pick a topic, set a timer, and respond out loud as if the examiner were on the line. Record yourself so you can hear your hesitations, filler words, and register slips.
Then get each response scored against the real NCLC criteria and repeat. FrenchShadow runs each scenario as a live conversation with an AI examiner, handles the objections in Task 2, and gives you instant NCLC feedback on fluency, register, vocabulary, and structure.
Frequently asked questions
What is the TEF Canada speaking section?
The TEF Canada Expression Orale (Section 4) tests your ability to speak French in two tasks. Task 1 is a formal information-gathering call where you ask questions; Task 2 is an informal task where you persuade a friend or acquaintance. Responses are recorded and scored on the NCLC scale (1–12).
What is Task 1 in TEF Canada speaking?
Task 1 (Section A) gives you a short advert or notice and asks you to call to get more information. You have about 5 minutes and must ask clear, well-formed questions using the formal "vous" register. It tests whether you can gather information politely and precisely.
What is Task 2 in TEF Canada speaking?
Task 2 (Section B) asks you to convince a friend or relative to do something — try an activity, buy a product, change their mind. You use the informal "tu" register, build an argument, and respond to their objections. It tests persuasion, spontaneity and register.
Are these the exact questions on my TEF exam?
No. These are practice topics and topic types that reflect the format and themes of the TEF Canada speaking section. Official exam content is confidential and can change at any time. Use them to build the underlying skills — asking questions, persuading, handling objections — not to memorise answers.
How should I practice TEF Canada speaking?
Practice out loud under time pressure, record yourself, and get each response scored against real NCLC criteria — fluency, register, vocabulary range, and structure. Repetition against the exact task format is what moves your speaking score, not silent reading.
